A man responsible for 80 metres of flytipping on one of Wandsworth's fantastic local green spaces is facing prosecution for his actions.
Whilst clearing the waste, an investigation by Wandsworth Council officers led to a nearby address.
Conservative controlled Wandsworth Council will now be issuing a summons to a local man to appear in front of a magistrates court of a breach of environmental protection law. If convicted, the offence could carry an unlimited fine and/or a six month jail term.
Conservative Councillor Jonathan Cook said: "This was a very serious flytip that has caused a great deal of upset and concern in the area.
"Local people feel the common has been desecrated and sadly I have to agree with them. The amount of rubbish and waste that was illegally dumped here was absolutely disgraceful.
"I am however pleased that this waste has now all been picked up and due to the efforts of the parks police service, ably assisted by some local residents who provided us with some very useful information, we will now be issuing a court summons to one person who we believe is linked to this offence.
"We are also working to trace the owner of the vehicle that was involved. If we are able to do that and get this person into court we will be urging the magistrates, or even potentially a crown court judge, to impose the very toughest sentence to reflect the community's anger and dismay at what has happened."
Local Councillor Antonnia Dunn added: "My thanks to the vigilant residents who were so quick to alert us to the eyesore on Tooting Common. I am delighted by the efficiency of Wandsworth Council in removing this fly-tip so quickly and by finding the evidence that will make a prosecution go forward"
