Conservative-run Wandsworth Council is famous for having the lowest Council tax in the UK. Wandsworth residents pay almost half the amount in Council tax compared to residents living under neighbouring Labour-run councils like Lambeth, Merton, or Hammersmith and Fulham. It’s an achievement which rests on over 40 years of Conservative administration.
We’ve done it by having a relentless focus on value for money, efficiency and cutting waste and bureaucracy – whilst never compromising on the quality of local services.
Sometimes residents ask why keeping Council tax low is such a priority.
I can give you at least three reasons. Firstly, keeping Council tax low helps those who can least afford it the most. Secondly, Conservatives believe that people know how best to spend their own money.
Our residents on average pay £1000 less per year on Council tax than neighbouring boroughs – this could go towards the family holiday, a rainy-day fund, or saving up for a deposit on a first house.
Thirdly, we don’t charge more Council tax because we know we don’t need to – we can provide quality public services without charging an arm and a leg.
Because of COVID-19, times are uncertain. That’s why we were the only London Council to freeze Council tax last year, because this was the single most impactful thing we could do as a Council to help residents in economically challenging times.
My pledge to you is that Wandsworth Conservatives will ensure that we maintain our low Council tax and our top quality services.
