As a result of the ongoing industrial dispute between the RMT and South Western Railway, the trade union has voted to strike over the busy Easter weekend.
Councillor Ravi Govindia, Leader of Wandsworth Council, commented:
“This is an unfortunate and unnecessary measure which will only serve to disrupt the bank holiday plans of local people.
What is particularly disappointing is that the percentage of guards on the railway line who voted in favour of the strike action was under 40%.
This is a remarkably low proportion and hardly a mandate for further disruption.
We would have hoped that pragmatism, common sense and the commuters’ best interests would prevail.
Unfortunately, it seems that the Union is still fighting the battles of the past and refuses to address the problems of the future.”
It appears that the RMT have placed narrow self-interest above that of long suffering commuters who deserve better.
Wandsworth Conservatives condemn the strike action and call not the Union and its supporters to rethink their regrettable actions.
